PAKISTANI TRUCK ART

Interact with the truck

Inspired by colorful Pakistani truck art that is hand painted and decorated by truck drivers as a symbol of pride. I created this interactive design using basic geometry and emojis to build a decorative truck that reacts when you hover over or click on it, making the experience feel dynamic and alive. This project is intended for a children’s museum as a playful way to engage and educate.

QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

The project is a tribute to the artisans who create Chamak Pati, a steel-carved and painted decorative craft unique to these trucks. Over the past decade, I’ve studied these trucks, collected photographs of their quotes, and visited the artisans to understand their process. This design aims to honor their work and inspire future generations to appreciate this vibrant tradition.

ITERATIONS

  • Started with simple geometric shapes to construct the truck, added emojis to replicate the reflective Chamak Pati effect, and introduced animations with delayed color changes for a twinkle effect.

  • Incorporated a road to imply motion and designed a smooth day-to-night transition to highlight the truck's beauty in different settings.

  • Added Urdu quotes collected over the years and planned a sound effect triggered by clicking on the driver (still in progress).

CHALLENGES

  • Adding a sound feature triggered by clicking the driver proved challenging due to limited coding experience in integrating audio files within the interactive framework.

  • I initially created culturally relatable designs inspired by traditional truck art motifs, but I was unable to upload these as custom emojis. This limitation forced me to use standard emojis.
